Neuromuscular training therapy with Galileo®

GALILEO® IN CHILD AND ADOLESCENT THERAPY

The principle of the Galileo platform is based on the natural movement of human gait. Galileo standing units work like a see-saw. You stand on this seesaw and have your muscles activated.

The rapid rocking motion of the Galileo platform causes a tilting motion of the pelvis like walking, but much more frequent. Depending on the frequency range, the body reacts with rhythmic, reflex-controlled muscle contractions alternating between the left and right side of the body (mechano-stimulation) to compensate. Reflex controlled means that you do not have to consciously activate your muscles, but the muscle contractions are triggered via the so-called stretch reflex, i.e. directly via the spinal cord.

Compared to voluntary movements, these reflexes are much better coordinated and subjectively associated with less effort. Galileo therapy activates the muscles from the legs up to the upper trunk, significantly increases blood circulation, especially in the legs, and stimulates the metabolism.

Neuromuscular TrainingTherapy with Galileo®

Neuromuscular training therapy with Galileo has many applications. Examples in children’s therapy are:

As well as general neuromuscular diseases and muscle weakness.

Set new stimuli

Galileo stimulates an enormous number of muscle contractions within a very short time, based on a natural movement pattern similar to walking. As a result, coordination and thus motor learning are also boosted. This stimulation for the neuromuscular system besides muscle building also offers:

  • Balance and perception training
  • Supporting the cognitive development of the brain with neuromuscular activity
  • Favouring the networking of synapses in the brain due to many movement cycles

MOTOR FOR MOTOR SKILLS

Neuromuscular development in childhood thrives on a lot of movement. Movement that becomes more and more complex and perfect step by step - many, many repetitions are crucial. Children with neuromuscular deficits do not manage this high number of repetitions on their own. Here, Galileo can excellently drive natural development - with a multitude of pivotal aspects that are all closely interwoven. Galileo has been working closely with children's therapy centres such as the Cologne Concept for over 20 years, but also with international research. Especially for paediatric therapy, this close cooperation has resulted in a whole product range of Galileo systems specially adapted to the needs of children and infants up to newborns.

Strengthening the muscles

Not only the neurological aspect needs to be trained, but also the muscle itself is much too weak due to the lack of movement. A holistic concept therefore always includes muscle building. Galileo ensures maximum muscular exertion in a short time, which allows a very efficient muscle workout. Muscle development and in particular the increase of muscle function and performance are the main goals of Galileo therapy.

NEW APPROACHES FOR THERAPY

Over the past 20 years, Galileo has become an established form of therapy, especially in children's therapy. One of the best known concepts worldwide is the Cologne concept "Auf die Beine". Over the past 15 years, just in this center by itself over 6000 children got the chance to use Galileo Therapy in a home-based therapy concept. This allowed new impulses for their individual development. The successes with Galileo are manifold - depending on the frequency range used, a wide variety of therapy goals can be set - such as:

  • Detonisation & reduction of spasticity
  • Stretching & contracture reduction
  • Muscle building & muscle function
  • Trunk control & posture
  • Coordination & balance
  • Body awareness & proprioception

Back on your feet!

THE COLOGNE SUCCESS CONCEPT

The Cologne concept: “On your feet” is an exercise therapy concept for children with neuromuscular diseases. The central core is home training with a Galileo device over a period of 6 months. For parents, it is also crucial that the costs are fully reimbursed by most German health insurance companies.

The project of the working group led by Prof. Schönau from the University Hospital in Cologne is a pioneering project that is attracting a great deal of attention worldwide, not least because the Cologne group has been documenting it scientifically in detail since the beginning. Already more than 10 years ago, the Queen Rania Clinic was founded specifically to bring together diagnostics, therapy, training for parents and accommodation in one place.

HOME TRAINING IN INTERVALS

"On your feet" was designed as an interval concept and consists of 6-month periods. In an initial 2-week inpatient phase, doctors and therapists work out the therapy goal for the following 6 months together with parents and children. The physiotherapists work out a suitable exercise catalogue and show the parents how to do these exercises with their children twice a day at home with their Galileo loaner (exercise period 6 months). At the halfway point there is a check-up and an adjustment of the exercises, at the end of the 6 months there is a final check-up, after another 6 months there is another evaluation of success. After these 12 months, a child can also participate in a concept interval again if needed. There are now many participants who have been taking part in the concept regularly for years and thus benefit from the Galileo application.

GALILEO® at "AUF DIE BEINE" (On your feet)

The Galileo team has been working closely with Prof. Schönau's team in Cologne since the beginning. This cooperation began more than 20 years ago - at that time on the topic of osteogenesis imperfects (OI or also "brittle bone disease") - with the focus on the measurement of bone parameters with the help of the highly specialised computer tomographs (pQCT) of the sister company Stratec Medizintechnik, a technology which in turn had its origins about another 15 years earlier in osteoporosis research. However, it soon became clear to the team that even in OI, building muscle and increasing mobility meant a significant improvement in disease progression and quality of life in the long term. Consequently, a study on OI patients was one of the first Galileo studies of the Cologne group and the foundation stone for the later Cologne concept "On your feet". This close cooperation continues until today. Thanks to the scientific documentation of the treatment successes, decisive insights have been gained that enable us to optimise therapy concepts with Galileo and open up new areas of application. However, the close cooperation also results in constantly further developed equipment series that are adapted to the special requirements of children and infants.

SCIENTIFIC RECOGNITION

As early as 2003, Prof. Schönau's working group received the prestigious "Hufeland Prize for the concept of the functional muscle-bone unit in childhood and adolescence and its consequences for the prevention and classification of osteoporosis". Osteoporosis, so not just an issue for the elderly. Based on this work, not only the Cologne concept emerged, but close cooperation also developed with space research, for example together with the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) or the Charié Berlin Centre for Muscle & Bone (ZMK). Loss of muscle and bone is also a serious issue for astronauts - especially during long-term missions in space.

WORLDWIDE unique research

Unique worldwide is not only the pioneering role of the home-based training concept, but also the very close scientific monitoring and the scientific methodical documentation of therapy successes - and this for a wide variety of clinical conditions. In recent years, this has not only led to a large number of scientific publications, but has also made it possible to finally document therapy concepts methodically correctly and, above all, in sufficiently large numbers of cases, especially for very rare clinical pictures. This is crucial in order to provide evidence-based proof of therapy concepts for rare diseases as well - a decisive step to establish new therapy concepts worldwide.

GALILEO® FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Galileo is not only effective for the affected children, but also for the parents. Parents not only suffer from a stressful everyday life, but also have to carry heavier and heavier loads with the growing child. The result is usually a tense back and back pain. Here too, Galileo can provide excellent relief, relaxing tension within minutes, reducing pain and strengthening the back muscles to be ready for everyday life again. Galileo is therefore a real gain not only for the affected children, but also for the particularly demanding parents - a gain for the whole family.
