Galileo Research Fact Sheet #11: Can endurance athletes also gain with Galileo Training?

The group around Marco Toigo at the ETH in Zurich investigated many of the very fundamental principles of Galileo Training especially on the muscle level. This study shows some of the basic effects of Galileo Training with high additional loads, which can be used to improve muscle power as well as to build-up muscle (Hypertrophy).
Very interesting are the reported results on the muscle fiber level: Both, the slow-twitch fibbers (Type-1) as well as the fast-twitch fibers (Type-2) showed a significant increase in the cross-sectional area by about 25% - which is interesting because usually training research assumes that you only gain what you train and therefore one would expect only one of the two to profit from a specific training. In addition to the training with high extra loads (70%-80% of the One Repetition Maximum (1RM)) the group also used Occlusion (this means that the blood flow in the legs is restricted by using cuffs). But this effect of the blood flow restriction (BFR) can also be used with Galileo without cuffs (#GRFS33) because if a muscle is activated enough its contraction will block its own blood supply while contracted.
These effects can be utilized easily, for example using the same exercises like in the last video of X-Man Toney Freeman where he used reduced extra loads but works with more static deep squats. This way Galileo causes a continuous contraction of the muscle, blocking its blood-flow and causing it to exhaust even faster - a training regime which can be used very effectively to increase muscle power (#GRFS83, #GRFS65, #GRFS35, #GRFS29, #GRFS19, #GRFS12).
